Renewable Natural Gas

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) consists of multiple names: bio-methane, swamp gas, landfill gas, and digester gas. This gaseous discharge is a product of anaerobic digestion which is the decomposition of waste material without the presence of oxygen. In addition, this product, when processed to purity standards, can be used as renewable gas and can be used as a fuel for plant heaters, power generators, and natural gas vehicles.

Captured RNG from an anaerobic process reduces emissions to the atmosphere and is used as a green energy fuel. RNG production is a result of anaerobic digestion whereby the solids are converted to methane and carbon dioxide gas. Municipalities around the globe are significantly reducing their operating costs and improving efficiency by harnessing a byproduct of the anaerobic process. They are turning to biogas co-generation as a alternate energy source.

The biogas can be processed into a high quality fuel for vehicle and power generation.

Scrubbers are needed for the removal of Hydrogen Sulfide and sulfur species, moisture, Siloxanes, and carbon dioxide in some applications.

Mustang Biogas Sampling System

To confirm the quality of the cleaned biogas, the Mustang® Biogas Sampling System will sample the gas prior to and after the gas cleaning process. This begins at the sample probe located in the raw gas pipeline. The sample tubing and the sample conditioning panel are electrically heated to slightly above the sample dew point to prevent loss of any gas components. Analyzing prior to and after the gas cleaning will help determine the performance of the cleaning process and also determine the scheduling of the filter media cleaning and or replacements.

Swine Biogas

The Mustang Biogas Sample Conditioning System is designed to yield a gas sample suitable for analysis from a stile process that ultimately yields a renewable energy source in the form of clean, dry biogas.  The system enables control of an unpredictable process through the measurement of moisture, hydrogen sulfide, oxygen, total sulfur, and diluents while simultaneously protecting the integrity of each analyzer.

Wastewater to Renewable Natural Gas

Wastewater treatment plants typically produce methane-rich gas from the anaerobic decomposition of waste solids, sludge, or biosolids in the municipal wastewater.  Constituents of Concern (COCs) such as metals, sulfur compounds, and siloxanes may be present in the gas because these materials are present in waste streams. With processing to increase the methane content, reduce water, and remove COCs, wastewater treatment plants are able to  produce RNG that meets tariff requirements for injection into natural gas pipelines.  Continuous monitoring thereafter and periodic onsite sampling before injection into the natural gas pipeline insures a reliable future supply.

The final gas quality is measured at the interconnect between the RNG plant and Southwest Gas’ natural gas pipeline.   The continuous monitoring begins by extracting an RNG sample through a probe housed in the Pony Heated Probe Enclosure. The extracted gas is transferred via the patented Mustang® Heat Trace Tube Bundle to a Mustang P53® Sample Conditioning System which maintains the temperature of the sample well above the hydrocarbon dew point. The representative sample is distributed using a Musang Modular Sample Control Panel to various analyzer within a Mustang Sampling industrialized building .  The RNG feed is typically monitored continuously for CH4, CO2, H2S, nitrogen, and oxygen to make sure it meets the tariff parameters set by Southwest Gas. Safety mechanisms at the interconnect allow the pipeline to reject any RNG not meeting standards into the natural gas pipeline.

Project Profiles

Renewable Natural Gas Virtual Pipeline

This is where the “virtual pipeline” comes into play enabling biogas producers to capture value by delivering their product to market. The biogas is compressed Renewable Natural Gas (Biomethane) into a tube trailer and transported from the point of generation to the point of injection or end use.

Wastewater Reclamation/Sewer Gas

Southwest Gas, Arizona’s biggest gas utility, has linked its system to Pima County’s Tres Rios Wastewater Reclamation Facility in Marana, a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant. Pima County for many years has used raw biogas to fully power the engines used at the Tres Rios sewer plant.

Swine Biogas – Renewable Energy

The process from gathering waste to producing a renewable source of methane can be broken down into the major steps of gathering, decomposition (anaerobic digestion), collection, cleaning, and injection (or alternate use as an energy source).
