Abstract: The Impact of Blending Renewable Natural Gas and Hydrogen into Pipelines on Natural Gas Analysis
Both Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) and Hydrogen (H2) gas have volumetric energy
densities less than conventional natural gas. Additionally, hydrogen has chemical
properties markedly different from hydrocarbon fuels. Blends of RNG and hydrogen in
pipeline transmission and distribution systems will alter the requirements of gas analysis
significantly as percentages of each increase. Areas impacted include safety, material
compatibility, efficiency, hazardous location classification, measurement, and analysis.
This paper will examine new methods and modifications required to evaluate gas mixtures
containing RNG and hydrogen along with other changes necessary to analytical systems.
