Gas Quality Analysis for Sustainable RNG Production
Sustainable production of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) depends entirely on the producer’s ability to control the quality of the end product. The accurate measurement of methane, inert gases, and contaminant levels within the mixed biogas steam at each process stage is necessary to control production. Safety, monetization of product, and regulatory compliance also depend on proper analytical measurements. Although sampling and analysis methods vary significantly throughout the process and depend on the sources and age of the decomposing feedstock, typical measurements include useful energy values (“BTU”) and Wobbe Index, along with sulfur dioxide (H2S), siloxanes, heavy metals, and carbon dioxide (CO2). This presentation will explore the steps necessary to produce Analytically Accurate measurements, drawing heavily on the standards established by The American Petroleum Institute (API), The American Gas Association (AGA), and The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
