Action Express Racing reports, "After winning and finishing third in the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic on Detroit’s Belle Isle Park, Action Express Racing looks to carry their momentum to the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen where the team scored back-to-back victories in 2012 and 2013 and notched a podium finish in 2014.

"The No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cider Tree Chevrolet Corvette DP enters the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen tied for first place in the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, while the Whelen Corvette DP enters the event second in the standings, trailing the leaders by only eight points."

According to the American Petroleum Institute Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards, which outlines proper sampling systems and procedures, you should:

  • Pre-heat and Post-heat your gas to the same temperature while taking a pressure cut.
  • Depending on the sample composition, a multi-stage pressure reduction may be required. (API 14.1)

API 6.6 additionally explains the effects of Joule-Thomson cooling caused from the Hydrocarbon Dew Point (HDP) and recommends the gas being sampled be maintained at least 30 deg. F above the expected HDP throughout the sampling system.

The Joule-Thomson effect - when compressed gas cools due to expansion without external work - can wreak havoc on your sample.  It may lower the gas temperature below its dew point causing condensation and an altered composition, resulting in extensive profit loss and even expense.

The temperature at which hydrocarbon vapor condensation begins is called the Hydrocarbon dew point (HDP).  This is not constant for all pressures, temperatures, or stream compositions and when the HDP is not measured, the sample temperature should be heated to at least 30 deg. F above the flowing temperature at the time the sample was taken.  Condensation and re-vaporization of hydrocarbons within the sampling system can cause significant distortions in a gas sample.  These types of sample distortions can occur under both flowing and non-flowing conditions.
